It’s Giving Tuesday—for a Week! A Message from G78 Chair Ted Jackson

Giving Week

Double your commitment. Double our impact.

When you donate to the Group of 78 between December 2, Giving Tuesday, and Monday, December 8, we will match your gift dollar-for-dollar, thanks to two anonymous donors.

Help us reinvent Canadian foreign policy in a disordered world.

Meeting this Moment

The moment we must meet is complex and challenging: Western international-development budgets, including Canada’s, are being slashed; the transition away from fossil fuels has stalled; the guardrails on the use of nuclear weapons are weakening; and the very concept of multilateralism is under threat. So is Canada’s sovereignty.

These are complex and challenging conditions. Yet there is hope and forward momentum everywhere.

Building Hope, Gaining Momentum

G78’s recent, very successful annual conference—entitled Redefining Development in the New World Disorder—featured inspiring speakers from academia, government and civil society working from a critical stance for a better world in such leading-edge areas as good jobs in the global economy, artificial intelligence, new financing strategies, and revitalizing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

And in our webinar series, advocacy work, and last year’s conference, we have been inspired by scholars, public servants and activists working with creativity and resolve for peace in Ukraine and Gaza, feminist foreign policy, climate justice, fossil-fuel non-proliferation, and Canadian democracy.

An Exciting Program for 2026

For the new year, we are planning an exciting program of online learning and action sessions on Indigenous perspectives on climate and stewardship, biodiversity and food security in Africa, and much more. In addition, our 2026 fall conference will focus on innovative peacebuilding strategies anchored in communities and civil society.

We want to do more. As you know, the Group of 78 is a volunteer-led non-profit with a modest budget. The opponents of poverty-reduction, equality, peace and sustainability are well-resourced.

We are revitalizing our membership by engaging a new group of students, connecting with Millennials, and reaching out to members of Generation X (the cohort that followed the Baby Boomers), who are now in senior positions in the public, private and non-profit sectors. We also intend to integrate an approach to Reconciliation with Indigenous communities. And we aim to make greater use of social media to get our message out.

How You Can Help

There are two ways you can help strengthen our capacity to be more effective.

The first is to donate to G78 between December 2, which is Giving Tuesday, and anytime up to midnight of Monday, December 8. We’re calling this Giving Week! We will match your contribution dollar-for-dollar, thanks to two anonymous donors. At the same time, you’ll receive a charitable donation receipt for your gift.

Double your commitment. Double our impact.

The second is to include a gift for the Group of 78 in your will. Bequests are the superpower of non-profits. Earned income (interest or investment returns) on these gifts provides us with flexible, long-term revenue. If you wish to pursue this option, consult your lawyer or estate advisor. And contact us any time to discuss how to make this happen.

Thank you for your support. We don’t take it for granted, ever.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Group of 78, we wish you a joyful and renewing holiday season.

All the very best,
