We are deeply saddened to share the news that John W. Foster, a member of our Board of Directors since 2020, passed away on April 18 after a struggle with cancer. John was a gentle but determined champion for humanity and justice and leaves a rich legacy of principle and action. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, John received his M.A. and doctorate from the University of Toronto. His activism launched in his student days continued throughout his life. With the United Church (1970-89), he focused on international development, solidarity and human rights. He led Oxfam Canada as National Secretary (1989-97) and was engaged in research with the North South Institute. John’s particular international focus was Latin America including through the Latin American Working Group. His writings and scholarship led him to teach at Carleton University and, from 2010 onward, at the University of Regina on international and justice studies. John served on numerous civil society boards, including the Canadian Council for International Cooperation and Greenpeace Canada. The Group of 78 will miss John’s wisdom, passion and advocacy for a better world and extends its sincere condolences to his loved ones and many friends.
