On October 9, 2026, the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo announced the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize: South African-born jurist and former UN human rights chief Navanethem (Navi) Pillay “for her efforts to promote peace and international law.” Ms. Pillay, now 85, and who defended an imprisoned Nelson Mandela and recently led international commissions on Israel’s war crimes in Gaza, was in Nuremberg in the room where Nazi perpetrators were tried when the announcement of her award was made. The Group of 78 is inspired by the courageous work of Ms. Pillay and enthusiastically endorses this award. We believe that, in honouring her efforts, the Nobel Committee is also underscoring the importance of strengthening the International Criminal Court, International Court of Justice and the United Nations at a time of increasing attacks on the rule of law.
