The Group of 78 joins peace and disarmanent organizations across our country to honour the excellence and sacrifice Canadian peacekeepers.
Sunday, August 9, 2026 was National Peacekeepers Day. As Walter Dorn, Professor at Royal Military College and Canadian Forces College, wrote recently: “It’s a day when we can honour those who served in peace operations, particularly those who lost their lives … If there are lessons from all those sacrifices surely one of them is that international organizations for peace need to be supported to advance the rule of law and our Canadian values.”
“The sad news,” Professor Dorn warns, “is that the Canadian government has decided to withdraw almost entirely from peacekeeping. Last month, the Department of National Defence announced that this year and next Canada would be closing its operations contributing to UN missions in the Cyprus, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kosovo, and South Sudan. The Canadian public is only starting to become aware of the demise of Canadian peacekeeping.”
