International Pugwash Statement on Attack Against Venezuela

By | January 6, 2026

On January 4, 2026, the Officers of the International Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs issued a statement expressing profound alarm at the US military attack against Venezuela and the capture of its president. Military actions undertaken outside the legal framework of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter and the core legal principles of the Organization of American States, said the statement, “erode the foundations of global and regional security, and contradict long-standing regional commitments to the peaceful resolution of disputes.” The Officers called for “an immediate cessation of any military action and a return to non-violent diplomacy respecting the rule of law in order to prevent further military escalation and the risk of wider regional conflicts.” Read the full statement here.
