BCGEU Cites Increased Risks for Investors in ICE Contractor Thomson Reuters

The Capital Stewardship Program of the British Columbia Government Employees Union argues that investors in Thomson Reuters face higher risks from the company’s contract to supply US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with investigative and surveillance products.

Thomson Reuters is a Canadian-owned global company headquartered in Toronto.

This follows reports, including an investigation by the New York Times, of workers at Thomson Reuters’ office in Minneapolis speaking out against the company’s contract with ICE, whose egregious human rights abuses and murders of two local citizens in Minnesota drew international condemnation.

The union’s head of shareholder engagement, Emma Pullman, was quoted in the Times article as saying: “Thomson Reuters is the gas in the tank that helps power the government’s immigration machinery. We are currently engaging with the company about human rights due diligence and governance of A.I.-enabled products.” Read the BCGEU post here.
