By | October 8, 2025

On October 8, 2025, the Group of 78 released Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Development Redefined, a background paper for our 2025 annual conference. The paper was prepared by researcher Leah Darbyson.

Dr. Roy Culpeper, G78 Past Chair, calls the paper “an indispensable tool for learning about the potential opportunities and threats in applying AI for sustainable development.” It identifies 16 case studies of AI applications in development and 17 global and regional initiatives and provides an extensive list of references. The paper concludes with six recommendations aimed at enabling Canada to help shape “a sustainable future that supports development, peace and disarmament”, and amplify leadership by the Global South in AI governance.
