Dear Prime Minister,
On behalf of the Group of 78, I am writing to commend you for your bold and forthright stance at the recent G7 meeting, in the face of egregious threats and bullying from President Trump and his aides.
It is regrettable that the U.S. Administration seems willing to precipitate a trade war with its closest allies, the cost of which is likely to be high not only for Canadians, but also for many Americans. Unfortunately, retaliatory measures by Canada are essential to demonstrate to the Administration, as you put it so clearly, that Canadians will not be pushed around. You are right to denounce the inexcusable tariffs imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum, along with the threat to impose tariffs on automobiles, and demands to immediately dismantle Canada’s supply management system in the dairy sector.
We are confident that most Canadians support you unequivocally in the face of intimidation by the U.S. in the trade arena. You and your government have acted with tact and courtesy at the negotiating table, while the U.S. administration’s resort to name-calling and ad hominem attacks is utterly reprehensible.
